International Women’s Day #pushforprogress

Following from my VAMFF post I wanted to share a quick note in honour of International Women’s Day. As a lifelong feminist (thanks Mum!) it has been wonderful to see this huge push for equality now throughout mainstream media thanks to campaigns such as #metoo and the protests for wage parity.

Within my own life I am so grateful to know so many brilliant, strong, intelligent, and loving women. These amazing women help the cause for equality advance by forging positive visibility of women, challenging stereotypes, and celebrating women’s achievements and I will continue to endeavor to do so as well.

One of the biggest challenges women face is gender pay inequity – a subject regularly categorised as a myth. Gender pay inequity however is not a myth and still happens today as quoted by Fair Work Australia “The undervaluation of women’s work is still embedded in many workplaces.” Published today alone I read “…median starting salary for medicine, which is $70,000 for men and $68,200 for women.”.  

Although I am not directly affected by this issue I am surrounded by many women who are and will to continue to #pushforprogress for this and many other ‘women’s issues’ to be resolved for as Audre Lorde once said, “I am not free while any women is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.”.
