Perth Getaway + The Killers!

My husband and I have been huge fans of The Killers fans since we first began dating many years ago, so when we found out they were touring Australia we knew we had to see them. Unfortunately, we missed out on tix in our home town of Melbourne (how do people manage to get any tickets on ticketek or ticketmaster when they sell out within 2 minutes!?) so we bought tickets to the Perth show and decided to make a fun getaway of it. I lived in Perth for a couple of years growing up and was reminded by this trip why it is such a wonderful place.

Our first stop was at the beautiful beach side town of Scarborough with its long-time surf, beach, skate culture. Scarborough has recently undergone some upgrades with the addition of the Scarborough Beach Pool, the revamped skate park and multi-level promenade. Swimming between the flags is a must at this beach as the waves are insanely huge and there are plenty of local eateries with The Sandbar being one of my favourites.

In between hitting up the beach and chilling poolside at the hotel (Rendevouz) we took a 30-minute Uber ride to Fremantle. The town boasts statuesque heritage buildings, art galleries galore, seaside views and The Fishing Boat Harbour precinct which features boardwalks, cafes, restaurants and a brewery. We shared a massive fish platter at Kailis Fish Market Café and treated ourselves to a new piece of art by a local artist which we had to lug back to the hotel and Melbourne (worth it)!

After our stay in Scarborough and visit to Fremantle, we made our way to Perth city where we stayed at the five-star Fraser Suites for a few nights. The hotel is perfectly decorated with luxe finishing’s displayed in both common areas and in the rooms. Our room overlooked Swan River and during our stay we enjoyed the gym, pool and spa facilities as well as the Heirloom Restaurant and in-room dining.

We decided to walk to Kings Park sans runners and were exhausted and sore by the time we arrived however it was well worth the trek! The picturesque views overlooking the whole of Perth, the stunning native plants in the gardens as well as Remembrance shrines were a must see. We also ate at the Botanical Café while at Kings Park which was decent but not the best meal we had throughout our Perth travels.

Of course, we had to visit the well-known Rottnest Island which has been getting a lot of publicity lately because of the #quokkaselfie by celebrities Roger Federer and Margot Robbie. The only memory I have of visiting Rottnest Island from when I was younger was getting extremely seasick on the boat and this time was no different. It is a bumpy ride so make sure you take your ginger travel calm tablets when visiting! The island has over 100 beaches and cute little quokkas can be spotted everywhere. You can choose to travel around the island by foot, bus or bike, and we chose bikes. I would say my husband and I prefer relaxation over adventure on holidays, so by the end of the day we found cycling quite tedious – if you enjoy the great outdoors than this is your thing! There were some stunning sights to be behold and the quokkas were definitely as adorable as imagined however I was saddened at the display of many tourists feeding them with human food even though this is strictly prohibited. Despite the irresponsible tourists feeding the quokkas, I really enjoyed Rottnest Island overall.

Finally, the last leg of the trip and the reason for our Perth visit – The Killers! What a show! They played songs both old and new with even a surprise cover of INXS thrown in the mix. Brandon Flowers performs with such tenacity, charisma and electric energy that when the show is over you want to see more. The show was well worth the trip and Perth in general is a fantastic place to visit, highly recommended for all.

xx
