A Taste of Tasmania
Beginning in Port Melbourne, we hopped onboard the Pacific Jewel and made our way to the beautiful Tasmania. Stopping at Hobart, Port Arthur and Burnie, the trip dubbed ‘a taste of Tasmania’ was the perfect way for us to explore Australia’s treasured island.
Our first day was spent at sea giving us the opportunity to enjoy all the activities, food and amenities the ship has to offer. Although I packed my gym gear with every intention of joining the group classes offered on board, I instead filled my time with a massage, swimming, soaking up the views in my balcony room and eating delicious meals.
The first stop was the city of Hobart known for its mountainous surroundings, heritage buildings and art offerings. While we enjoyed a visit to MONA, Hobarts most renowned gallery, the little galleries in the CBD are not to be missed. Filled with local artists work and quirky knick knacks to take home, my Grandma and I loved scouring through all the shops and came back on the ship a few bags heavier! Before heading back to the ship, we indulged in some delicious Italian followed by modern Argentinian (yes, we stopped at two eateries!) followed by a walk-through parliament house gardens. As we walked back onboard I couldn’t help but feel I’ll be back again soon as there is plenty more of Hobart to see and do!
Next up we stopped at the stunning Port Arthur. While filled with so much beauty, the feeling of heartbreak is hard to deny. We learnt of the history from local tour guides and were then left to explore the historical site. As I walked through desolate buildings I couldn’t help but reflect on the dark times of the past. Even when I look back at photos I took that day, the same feeling comes rushing back to me and is something that I will never forget – truly a must see!
Finally, we stopped at the beach town of Burnie. Although small in size, the passionate locals told us of the best sights to see and guided us throughout town. My love of local art led me straight to the Makers Workshop where you can meet the local artists as they create their latest masterpiece. After meeting with the local artisans and scoring some new goodies to take home, we finished the day with a relaxing seaside meal before heading back to the ship.
I can’t wait to go back and explore more of what this beautiful state has to offer! My Grandparents, husband and I absolutely loved our trip to Tasmania and recommend it to all!
